It's Halloween! Time for costumes, parties, traditions, sugar, and oodles of silliness and fun!

I've shared kid-friendly Halloween-themed chair and mat yoga as well as some fun craft and mindfulness activities over the past two weeks. This week, I am sharing a wonderful calming technique for you to do with your kids and feel nice and relaxed and slow things down as needed.

Do not worry - it IS Halloween themed, so you can slip it right in between the pumpkin carving, trick-or-treating, and sugar stash sorting (send the peppermint patties my way, please).

Happy Halloween! Boo!

Love,

Lisa Roberts xoxo

Spider Web Breath

What is Spider Web Breath and how does it help? Spider Web Breath is a creative technique to help kids learn how to control their breath and turn something soft into something powerful. When you think about it, the breath is very similar to a spider web; it can be soft yet strong, and it is imperative to survival. Just as a spider works diligently building a strong web to catch insects to eat, when kids work on developing mindful breathing skills, they become stronger, healthier, and happier too.

Simple steps:

Begin in a comfortable seated position. Sit tall, but relaxed. Align your shoulders with your hips and be sure that your shoulders and arms remain relaxed too.

·      Gently close your eyes and begin to breathe in and out of your nose.

·      Slow and deepen your breath, gradually increasing the length of each inhale and exhale.

·      Continue to breathe, slowly and smoothly, but gently shift your attention to the center of your forehead, just between your eyebrows.

·      Imagine that your breath is no longer air, but a glistening spider web that enters your body at the point between your eyebrows.

·      Follow the journey of that shiny silver web for the duration of your inhale, imagining it flowing through your body all of the way to your belly button.

·      Imagine that same silver web gently tugging your belly button in toward your spine, before it flows through your body and back out the space between your eyebrows with each exhale.

·      Slowly and carefully build a web, by imagining each breath in and out spinning a new thread.

·      Easy inhales: follow the shiny and silver web as it journeys from the point between your eyebrows to your belly button.

·      Slow exhales: follow the web as it gently tugs your belly button in and journeys back through your body, to your forehead.

·      Continue building your web, feel it getting stronger and fuller with each breath.

As you continue to breathe and build your web think about the following:

·      How does a spider know to spin a web? Is he taught or does he simply know?

·      Have you ever simply known how to do something without being taught?

·      This is inner wisdom. What wisdom were you born with?

·      Really think about this as you continue to breathe, like a strong, wise, spider building a shiny silver web.

·      Wisdom to build.

·      Wisdom to rest.

·      Wisdom to breathe.

·      Wisdom to know exactly what you need.

·      Breathe naturally and relax, just like a spider, nestled safely in his web.
