Teaching kids valuable coping skills can sound overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. You can fill your child's toolbox with valuable coping skills in as little as 60 seconds per day.
As adults, it is our responsibility to model healthy coping skills to our children and encourage kids to explore strategies that work for them every day. Let me repeat that part. Every. Day. Do not wait for your child to experience a meltdown or escalation and attempt to turn it into a teaching moment. Practice simple breathing and mindfulness techniques with your kids every day and help them explore what works for them, and what doesn't. This encourages kids to develop coping skills toolboxes to access when they need them the most. The best part about doing it with them is that you gain the benefits as well... and you will easily be able to guide your child to access the tools and practice along with them as needed.
The following breathing technique is favorite of mine from my book Breathe, Chill New Edition. I hope you enjoy practicing with your favorite kiddos!
Love,
